WSAA Appraised Sewage Pump Stations

Mullaly FRP sewage pump stations and emergency storage tanks hold a WSAA (Water Services Association of Australia) product appraisal: PA 1020, Issue 4, published 21 April 2026 and valid to 20 April 2031. Water utilities, councils and specifiers can view the appraisal on the WSAA website.

The appraisal covers pump stations with external diameters from 1.2 m to 4 m, suitable for depths up to 14 m, with deeper pump stations available on request.

Mullaly pump stations are designed to WSA 04-2022 (Version 3.2), the Sewage Pumping Station Code of Australia.

What Is a Sewage Pump Station?

A sewage pump station (also called a sewer pump station or sewage pumping station) collects wastewater where gravity alone can’t carry it to the treatment plant or the next sewer main. Sewage flows into a wet well, and submersible pumps lift it into a pressure main once it reaches a set level. A valve pit holds the valves that control and isolate that flow.

A Mullaly pump station can be supplied with an integral or external valve chamber, tailored to suit the site.

Configurations

Combo pump station (wet well and valve pit in one unit). The integral valve chamber minimises excavation periods and disruption to local flora and fauna, and requires less space in the overall design.

Stand-alone wet well. Used where a larger diameter is required, or where transport restrictions prevent a combo pump station being transported to site.

Separate valve pit. Protects pipes and valves from damage and corrosion, and above-ground pipework from vandalism. Options include cast iron or bronze valves, scour lines and bypass lines if required, and dismantling joints for valve removal.

Macerator chamber. Supplied at Sydney International Airport Pier B as part of a wet well, valve pit and macerator combo packaged pump station.

Access chambers (manholes). FRP manholes in lengths up to 14 m.

Need emergency storage as well? Mullaly also makes fibreglass storage tanks from 5,000 to 150,000 litres.

Why Fibreglass for Sewage

Steel in concrete corrodes due to hydrogen sulphide (H2S) gas attack and the sulphuric acid it produces. Mullaly pump stations are made with premium grade vinyl ester resin, which resists the corrosive chemicals in sewage, so no internal coatings or liners are required.

  • Watertight, one-piece construction. 100% watertight, solid wall construction from top to bottom. All internal components are supplied as part of the package, so there is no on-site joining or sealing: no joints between precast segments and no field-applied sealants. Groundwater stays out and sewage stays in, which helps with EPA pollution-control requirements.
  • Fast installation. In most cases a Mullaly pump station is set and backfilled within 1 to 2 days of delivery, and on some projects in as little as a few hours.
  • Wet or dry sites. Whether installed in a fully flooded hole to grade, or in dry hole conditions with no ground water, Mullaly pump stations are carefully designed for a wide range of site conditions.
  • Less confined space entry. Limited need to enter the pump station as a confined space.
  • Lightweight. Lighter than precast concrete. Light weight reduces OH&S risk, and Mullaly pump stations have been installed in some of the most remote locations in Australia.
  • Low maintenance. Smooth walls reduce scum build-up and resist abrasion from suspended grit.
  • Proven. Hundreds of successful installations and no known structural failures for over 30 years.

Projects

Lotus Glen SPS upgrade, Townsville (2014). An RPEQ certified 3.75 m diameter, 9.03 m deep wet well and a separate valve pit replaced an old concrete station next to a creek, on a site with water and rock and little room for ground disturbance. Client: Townsville City Council. Contractor: NQ Excavations.

North Queensland Stadium, Townsville (2020). A 3 m diameter, 6.2 m deep wet well and valve pit combo, supplied completely fitted out so pipe and electrical connections could be made quickly on a busy site. Builder: Watpac.

Sydney International Airport Pier B (2010). A wet well, valve pit and macerator combo packaged pump station for Sydney Airport Corporation, installed where it takes the weight of an Airbus A380 parked on top of it.

Sydney Airport waste dump pump station (2019). A 3.0 m diameter, 5.0 m deep wet well and valve pit combo.

Ramingining, NT (1999). Inspected 20 years on, the pump station was still in near perfect condition, with smooth, clean surfaces and stainless steel fixtures.

Who Uses Mullaly Pump Stations

Councils that use Mullaly FRP packaged pump stations include Townsville City Council, Cairns Regional Council, Tablelands Regional Council, Torres Straits Regional Council, Cassowary Coast Regional Council, Whitsunday Coast Regional Council and Mackay Regional Council.

“I would have no hesitation in recommending a Mullaly Fibreglass pump station as we have been installing these for over 15 years and have found the ease of installation, combined with the reduced safety risks and excavation works required make these units an overall cost effective solution and great value for our clients.”

Eric Lollo, NQ Excavations

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a sewer pump station the same as a sewage pump station?
Yes. Sewer pump station, sewage pump station, sewage pumping station and wastewater pump station all describe the same thing: a wet well with pumps that lifts wastewater into a pressure main. “Sewerage” refers to the network of pipes the station serves.

What standard do Mullaly sewage pump stations meet?
Mullaly FRP sewage pump stations hold WSAA product appraisal PA 1020 (Issue 4, valid to 20 April 2031) and are designed to WSA 04-2022 (Version 3.2), the Sewage Pumping Station Code of Australia.

How deep can a Mullaly pump station go?
The standard range runs from 2 m to 14 m deep and 1.5 m to 3.75 m in diameter. Deeper pump stations are available on request, and larger units are engineered to project.

How long does installation take?
In most cases a Mullaly pump station is set and backfilled within 1 to 2 days of delivery, and on some projects in as little as a few hours.

How much does a sewer pump station cost?
It depends on the diameter, depth, configuration, fit-out and delivery distance. Send us your project specification or drawings and we’ll quote.

Do you supply the pumps?
We supply the FRP structure fitted out with pipework and valves. We can help coordinate pumps, controls and switchboards through our distribution partners as a complete package.
